Interesting Parallels
As some of you know, I write and record music with an amateur rock band called the Dynosaurs. This past weekend, we held our 28th recording session at a secluded cottage in Eastern Ontario. Believe it or not, there are some interesting parallels between recording original music and responding to a hazardous incident.
Musicians compose songs. Emergency managers create plans. Both plan events and synchronize plans within teams. Both activities make use of advanced technology. Musicians play music synchronically while first responders execute plans concurrently in real time, both with the goal of achieving expected results. Of course, first responders are involved in much riskier activities, but, in both groups, failing to execute as a coordinated unit will result in a poor outcome.
If you and some of your team members play music, I encourage you to get together. Playing music with others is a great way to reduce stress – and we could all use some relief these days. You may also find it helps you and your colleagues work better together as a coordinated team. Give it a try! It’s fun! Stay safe!
