“Addressing the Ground Search and Rescue (GSAR) Technology Gap”
Currently, there is no standardized technology platform in Canada to support ground search and rescue (GSAR) activities.
This big technology gap not only negatively affects the outcome of searches for lost and missing persons, but it also severely restricts the ability of the GSAR community to automate and collect accurate and timely data to:
a) adapt to the changing demographic and behaviour of missing persons,
b) share GSAR information and knowledge,
c) make effective decisions in real time,
d) formulate evidence-based policy, and
e) develop governance models.
The GSAR Incident Command System (ICS) Project, funded by Public Safety Canada, addresses this technology gap by developing and implementing an integrated solution that enables the automation of data collection within a real-time environment, and the sharing and reporting of information at all operational levels within a standardized ICS environment. Importantly, the GSAR ICS solution supports interoperability among GSAR organizations and jurisdictions while providing capabilities that extend to the broader emergency management and first responder communities.
