There are many examples in nature of herds or packs of wild animals protecting the weakest among them. They understand instinctively that the long-term survival of the group depends on the ability to protect the whole. In some cases, the loss of an individual within a group can be seen to cause great distress to others, even among the wildest of creatures. While not all human beings conduct themselves with the same fearless integrity exhibited by less evolved animals in the wild, there are certainly many among us who do.
COVID-19, among other major emergencies in 2020, as evidenced by unprecedented hurricane and wildfire seasons in the US, has shown us who some of these people are – especially those who have risked and, in some cases, lost their lives in the process of saving others. They stand as the greatest examples of leadership that humanity has to offer – people who place the needs of others above their own. These frontline responders and those who support them are not always visible within our communities, but we all know who they are. Let’s keep them in our thoughts as we celebrate this Holiday Season and the end of this unforgettable year.
